Water Process and Pumping Control Support

Control-system strategy and support for water process and pumping assets — operational stability, energy visibility, duty management, instrumentation use and maintainable PLC / SCADA integration.

[ 01 ] Challenge

Pumping systems can become operationally unstable when pump selection, flow control, reservoir levels, valve movements and VSD behaviour are not coordinated properly. Frequent changes between pump combinations can increase mechanical wear, create unstable operation and make it difficult for operators to understand why the system is changing state. The asset required a control strategy that considered process requirements, mechanical constraints, instrumentation, energy performance, operator visibility and long-term maintainability.

[ 02 ] Scope
  • 01 Developed high-level pump control strategy
  • 02 Reviewed pump combination selection logic
  • 03 Considered flow, pressure, level and VSD data
  • 04 Supported use of suction and discharge pressure information for TDH estimation
  • 05 Considered pump operating range and mechanical suitability
  • 06 Included anti-hunting concepts such as hold times and transition penalties
  • 07 Considered run-hour and start-count balancing
  • 08 Reviewed use of VSD power, speed and current data
  • 09 Supported SCADA visibility for pump operation and diagnostics
  • 10 Supported structured approach to future PLC-based optimisation
  • 11 Considered operator visibility and maintainability
[ 03 ] Device integration

Flow, pressure, level and VSD information were used to support better control decisions and operator visibility. Where VSD and instrument data are available, the control system can use this information to improve operation, diagnostics and future optimisation.

[ 05 ] Outcome
  • 01 Improved control strategy clarity
  • 02 Improved basis for stable pump operation
  • 03 Reduced risk of pump combination hunting
  • 04 Improved operator understanding of pump selection behaviour
  • 05 Improved use of VSD and instrument data
  • 06 Supported energy and operational visibility
  • 07 Created a better basis for maintainable PLC-based optimisation
